This was the first short description that I wrote for the Duchy of New Vinberland, for the description section of the spreadsheet. At the time I kept the description fairly vague since I didn't know what the political or geographic situation would be like in my area of the map and I wanted to leave myself with some room to develop the ideas further in the future.
==========================================================
While there is obviously a diversity of opinions within a society, generally the people of the Duchy tend to see a diversity of ideas as source of strength and have an acceptance of the rights of others to live their lives as they choose.
The government of New Vinberland is an executive constitutional monarchy and the economic system capitalist. The executive branch of government is the Duke of New Vinberland in a hereditary position as head of state. The legislative branch is bicameral, with one house comprised of elected representatives without noble title and a second house comprised of the various secondary and minor nobles of the duchy. While the aristocratic aspects of system does at times cause friction within the generally egalitarian society this is somewhat alleviated by the ability of noble patent to be granted to those who excel and an ingrained tradition within many of the noble families of seeing themselves as servants to the realm.
The leaders of the Duchy see the present time as one with great risks to the Duchy, with rumours of other nations with expansionist ideology having reached the Duchy. The immediate goals of the duchy are two fold and driven by a fear that this wave of expansion by others will give rise to authoritarianism, fascism and dictatorships. Firstly is a peaceful incorporation of immediate surrounds of the duchy to both extend protection the peoples in those areas and give the duchy the expanded economic base needed to survive the expected struggle. Secondly to make contact with like minded nations to form an alliance of mutual trade and defense, with the intent of resisting those who's goal is violent subjugation of the free people.
