Yeah, never done this before, and whenever I'm trying to do it here, I'm ending up on some weird fortified base map, or something with ice, sand and trees all on the same map So I'm on MekHQ, I've gone to the briefing room, selected the scenario, and gone to Start Game.
- MegaMek has popped up
- I've added the enemy tanks, switched blind drop off, changed the tank commander stats, put blind back on
- Now to do the map...
- I go to select map, it says map selected - 0: [SURPRISE], I tried changing this to [GENERATED] - but this led to the aforementioned castle type structure in the centre of the map (ah, a little bit of investigation and it seems it was the \unofficial\Ratach Maps\TheEnclave)
- I changed the dropdown on the left to 100x100
- Clicked on planetary conditions and changed to the correct settings
- Clicked on Generated Map Settings and changed the map conditions to the following:
Board size 100x100. No urban areas/fortifications (If I try to change the density and/or town size to 0, it turns red, like there's an error? City dropdown is on none), no roads, no planted fields, no mountains and very low elevation changes (1-2), chance for craters 18% (min 3-6, radius 3-4); rough (min 15-25), no sand, swamp (35-55), light woods (25-45), no heavy woods, lakes (min 3-5, radius 6-12; deep water 45%), river (35%), no ice) Theme: Grass (Do I just type this in?)
Now, when I save and go back to MegaMek, the Maps selected is back to 0: [SURPRISE], is that right?
EDIT: No it isn't I'm back on that Enclave map

Ok, so I changed it slightly and now it's broken in a different way When I got back to MegaMek after loading all of the changes above, I changed the maps selected back to [GENERATED] Despite the swamps being set to 35-55, and the woods being set to 25-45, every single non water Hex is a light forest (unhelpful considering it's a Tank battle!). Is this expected?

I have a tutorial video on maps made up under the MegaMek News section, look for the Board Editor thread.
For Theme: ____ you just type in the wood needed: Grass, Lunar, Mars, etc.
Under Town if using the basic settings you can choose between NONE, TOWN, HUB, GRID, etc. If you are not using urban select NONE.

If you have swapped out the the [SURPRISE] for [GENERATED] you seem to be on the right track, and if the [SURPRISE] map you initially got was that enclave then you have the size correctly set to 100x100. Can you post a screen shot of your generated map settings and the sample map that is produced when you press 'View Game Board"? There might be some thing apparent in the settings that is causing the problem.
*** Edit *** I see Kris replied while I was typing this, he will obviously be better able to assist than me.

Hmm, it seems changing my forest density to 5-10% gives me a slightly more manageable map.
EDIT: Just seen the above, I'll have a look

I also emailed you a response about the woods settings, it should be under the advanced settings 25 to 45 wood tiles total, NOT 25 to 45% chances a tile will be woods.

Ok then, a spot of experimentation with bare maps (the hover over tool tips help a bit), that number in advanced settings, the 'Number of woods (min-max)' isn't tiles total, or even a number out of ten etc. The top fields (Number of woods (min-max)) is the number of wooded regions that would be present in a 17x16 map, and the second fields (Swamp size in hexes (min-max)) is how many hexes each wooded region is. So if I change all of those fields to 1, on a 17x16 map, we would have 1 wooded hex. As our hexes are 100x100, not 17x16, we're dealing with a map approx 37 times bigger, on a 100x100 map we would have 37 lonely wooded squares dotted about. Unfortunately we can't use decimals in those fields, so, as I think Admin was intending me to have a very sparsely wooded area, I've changed the number of woods (min-max) to 1-1 and the Swamp size in hexes (min-max) to 0-3, which has given me 39 wooded tiles in total, in clumps of 1s, 2s and 3s, which looks much more natural than single trees spotted about Apologies if everyone already knew that, but I had no idea and hoped it might help others in future.

Maybe we should just go back to the smaller sized maps of the alpha? Aerospace seems to generate a lot of headaches. Sad because I just finished designing a namesake conventional bomber, the Landcaster IIC.

Is it anymore difficult to use the auto generator on larger maps than smaller ones? I've never used it before this campaign but it seems manageable enough.
