It's that time again! Time to compare two of the classics! Which do you think is the best and why?
TBT-5N Trebuchet
versus
WTH-1 Whitworth

This is a good matchup. But the winner is actually quite easy to determine when you look at the stats.
Mobility - Whit (4/6/4) \ Treb (5/8) [ Tie in my mind as JJ help negate the Treb speed advantage] Armor - Whit (128) \ Treb (120) [ Winner Whitworth. The Treb has overall more "Health" but crits are scary] Avg Dmg AS - Whit (27) \ Treb (33) [ Winner Trebuchet. LRM 15's are better than 10's.] Heat - Whit (10) \ Treb (10) [ Winner Whitworth. LRM 15's are two hot in comparison] BV - Whit (982) \Treb (1191) [ Winner Whitworth. Take the extra 200 BV and put it somewhere else.] Cost - Whit (2.9mil) \ Treb (4.3mil) [ Winner Whitworth. Sitting at 1.4 million c-bills cheaper.] Quirks - Whit (2) \ Treb (1) [ Winner Trebuchet. Weak Leg's is a problem if you get close, but simply EtM is better than Rugged] "Rugged 1" "Easy to Maintain" "Weak Legs"
Hopefully after all of that I have convinced more Mechcommanders to use the Whitworth.

I would call it a tie for both armor (or more generally, defense) and heat. Taking the idea of armor and expanding slightly wider to defense in general, the Trebuchet can fire 50% more LRMs per turn and an opponent that is destroyed sooner is one that has less opportunity to damage you. The higher rate of LRM fire also allows the Treb to more quickly empty its ammunition bins and reduce its vulnerability to ammo crits.
Regarding heat a Treb walking and firing LRMs for four turns in a 2/2/2/1 pattern can manage its heat as well as a Whitworth firing 2/2/2/2, and fires 105 LRMS compared to the 80 a Whitworth would fire in four turns.
But even with all that, I still think the Whitworth is the better mech. The contribution to battles that a WTH-1 makes for its cost in BV/C-Bills almost always seems higher than a Treb.
(However going beyond the question of WTH vs TBT, if I had my choice of a TRO3025 medium mech with two LRM launchers and an array of range 9 weapons for close range fighting I would take the third option, the Dervish)

These are very good points Garyp. I agree running out of ammo is a solid "defense" for single pick up game. For campaign play I prefer being able to go without logistic support longer.

Sounds like I need to conduct a few more trials by combat!!! Once again, I would like to direct your attention to the "Mech Factory" website and its Trial 1v1 Combat Trial system. battletech.rpg.hu/mechfactory_frame.php
The Trebuchet TBT-5N vs The Whitworth WTH-1 (ie: Both 3/4 Gunnery/Piloting at BV 1080 vs 963)
Trial 1: Battle won by Whitworth WTH-1 in 15 rounds by devastation (CT destroyed). Trial 2: Battle won by Trebuchet TBT-5N in 13 rounds by devastation (ammo explosion/pilot killed/CT destroyed). Trial 3: Battle won by Trebuchet TBT-5N in 9 rounds by devastation (ammo explosion/CT destroyed). Trial 4: Battle won by Trebuchet TBT-5N in 10 rounds by devastation (ammo explosion/CT destroyed). Trial 5: Battle won by Trebuchet TBT-5N in 15 rounds by devastation (ammo explosion/CT destroyed). Trial 6: Battle won by Trebuchet TBT-5N in 14 rounds by devastation (ammo explosion/CT destroyed). Trial 7: Battle won by Whitworth WTH-1 in 10 rounds by devastation (ammo explosion/CT destroyed). Trial 8: Battle won by Whitworth WTH-1 in 22 rounds by devastation (CT destroyed). Trial 9: Battle won by Whitworth WTH-1 in 11 rounds by devastation (CT destroyed). Trial 10: Battle won by Whitworth WTH-1 in 16 rounds by devastation (ammo explosion/CT destroyed). Trail 11: Battle won by Trebuchet TBT-5N in 10 rounds by devastation (gyro knockout/CT 1 point left) Trail 12: Battle won by Trebuchet TBT-5N in 13 rounds by devastation (ammo explosion/CT destroyed).
Remember folks that 12 trials is a small sample size, but feel free to test for yourselves.

I guess that extra LRM fire per turn really makes a difference! I tried out that trial by combat program myself and out of 30 results the Trebuchet won out 22 times. I like the look of the Trebuchet better and always felt it was a glass cannon compared to the Whitworth, but I had swung my opinion onto the Whitworth per its costs in price/bv as stated above.
This just goes to show that LRM's are no joke even if they scatter the damage about.
Also the amount of ammo explosions created is very alarming.
