Update #3 – July 1, 3039 to August 13, 3039
Guerilla Warfare contract for Lyran Commonwealth against Free Rasalhague Republic on Hyperion
“You want your LRM ammo where?!”
- Lead Mech Tech Darerca Honeywill, Sanguine Samurai – July 1, 3039 – Hyperion
July
Alright! So after some persuading, Snake Eyes managed to get the Mech Techs to switch his LRM launcher with his LRM ammo. He keeps saying it lowers the chance of an ammo explosion!
We got lucky and found some maintenance facilities (my excuse to allow this to happen) to do some experimental changes to Nomad’s Archer, adding CASE and 2 heat sinks by dropping the two rear facing lasers and a ton of armor. It took the techs 18 days to do it (first try to refit failed) and they were grumbling the whole time, but Nomad seems happy now. Luckily with enemy Morale so low, we were able to spare the time.
Snake Eyes improved his piloting, he is now a 4/4 Mechwarrior.
July comes and goes with no enemy movement we can capitalize on at all! On to August.
August
August 1 rolls around and we get notice that the Enemy morale is still very low, so low in fact that we will be able to have a special mission opportunity at some point during the month.
Allied Traitors! (Special Mission)
On August 11, our newest recruit Erik-Johan is asked to go on patrol with two of our Lyran allies. With him being a Rasalhague native they must have thought he would join them in betraying our mission. They turn on him when he refuses. Erik must fight for his life.
Round 1
All 3 units start in the center of the map. Luckily for Erik, only one of the traitors is close to him and he has the firepower to blow away either of them in a few shots. But unluckily, they’re much faster than him. He ignites his jumpjets and tries to put as much distance as he can from the wolfhound. The last thing he wants is larger laser to his rear armor.
Firing his SRM4 as he jumps, he misses the Wolfhound. The Wolfhound scores a large laser hit on his Left Leg.
Round 2
Erik kicks his jumpjets on again and jumps away. But the Wolfhound just runs after him.
Erik scores a hit with one SRM missile to the Wolfhound’s CT, but receives a glancing blow from a medium laser to his own CT in return and a hit to his head in return. Fighting the pain, he stays conscious and throws a punch into RT of the Wolfhound. The Wolfhound kicks his injured left leg. Not much armor left there.
Round 3
Luck finally strikes for Erik! As he pushes his Panther into the air yet again to get behind the Wasp that is approaching him. He hears a crash as the Wolfhound who tried to follow him crashes in the Low G’s.
The Wolfhound stands missing a bit of his CT armor. Erik sees a good shot with his SRMs… and misses. He takes two more medium laser hits, one only glancing off his CT.
Round 4
Trying to cool off some, Erik pushes his mech backwards as far as it can go. The other two mechs are right on his trail.
Erik hits the Wasp with one of his SRMs, but again takes two medium laser burns for his trouble. This isn’t looking good.
The Wasp kicks the last of the armor off of Erik’s Left Leg and out of frustration, Erik kicks at the Wasp. And to his amazement, the Wasps own left Leg explodes off of its body! Erik manages to keep his mech vertical as he watches the Wasp fall down.
Round 5
Initiative is with Erik this time and he rolls well and goes last! The Wasp pilot KO’s himself trying to get his mech upright, leaving only the Wolfhound for Erik to deal with. The Wolfhound in either panic or stupidity runs right in front of Erik. Erik takes the opportunity to back up slightly to finally get his PPC into a range where it can be useful.
Erik takes a large laser to his LT, destroying one of his Heat Sinks there.
He lands a PPC shot on the Left Arm of the Wolfhound, not what he was hoping for. Out of anger he fires his SRMs at the downed Wasp, hitting with 3. Hopefully that heat doesn’t come back to bite him.
Round 6
The wolfhound backs up away from Erik again, Erik backs up to try to get out of effective large laser range, but stumbles backwards over a hill! Damaging a jump jet in his Left Leg in the process. He’s able to stand though.
Two medium lasers soar over Erik’s head as he stands back up. The other pilot obviously not expecting him to fall. Erik returns the gesture by blowing the Wolfhound’s Left Arm off with a PPC shot.
Round 7
The Wasp pilot wakes up with a start and tries to stand up. The knock to his head must have made him forget that his leg was blown off. He promptly falls over and knocks himself out again.
The Wolfhound rushes Erik, Erik again backs up enough to use his PPC effectively
The Wolfhound scores a glancing blow (half damage) to Erik’s Left arm while Erik manages to hit the Wolfhound’s Left Leg with his PPC.
Round 8
Erik continues to back away from the Wolfhound, the Wolfhound pilot dances around a bit but decides to stay in short range of the Erik’s PPC.
Erik lets loose another PPC shot, and it hits the dirt where the Wolfhound’s Left Leg would be if it wasn’t behind a hill. Luckily, the Wolfhound misses as well.
Round 9
Erik continues to back away from the Wolfhound, the Wolfhound continues to Dog him.
Erik must have a thing for legs. He blasts the Wolfhound’s Left Leg with another PPC round, this time hitting. The Leg looks bad, but the Wolfhound returns the favor with a Large Laser burn on Erik’s CT.
Round 10
The Wasp pilot wakes up and promptly knocks himself out again. Erik lifts up on his Jump jets flying backwards away from the Wolfhound. The wolfhound, true to his name pursues.
Erik fires his SRMs to try to keep cool while jumping and misses. The Wolfhound scores a medium laser hit on his CT, destroying the rest of the armor but luckily not damaging anything.
Round 11
The Wolfhound decides to back off slowly for some reason! Erik takes the opportunity to widen the gap even more, hopefully putting him at a range advantage.
Erik lands a glancing blow on the Wolfhound’s RL with his PPC and takes no return fire.
Round 12
The Wasp pilot finally gets the hint and abandons his mech, but is knocked out during the ejection. Geez Louise.
Erik runs forward a bit trying to put what’s left of his right armor towards the Wolfhound. The Wolfhound rushes past him.
Erik turns as the Wolfhound goes past, firing his SRMs at it. Missing.
He someone takes another glancing large laser shot to the CT without any internal damage. 4 Internal CT structure left now.
Round 13
Both mechs have seen better days. Erik runs forward before turning around, hoping to have some distance but the Wolfhound his hot on his tail again.
Cursing under his breath he fires his PPC and SRMs, thinking it might be his last salvo. The PPC goes wide, but the SRMs hit the RT and RA of his Enemy.
Miraculously, Erik takes a glancing critical head shot with no effect. He stays conscious. Another glancing blow removes the rest of his RL armor and he takes a direct hit to his RT, leaving only 5 pts of armor left in that location.
At this point, Erik has less armor than a flea.
I meant to take a screenshot of his armor. But I must have overwritten while excited. The man has 5 armor on his LA, 10 armor on his RA, 5 armor on his RT and 2 armor on his Head
Round 14
The Wolfhound rushes up to the Panther and pauses, Erik runs past him and turns around trying to get a lucky shot on the enemy’s Rear armor.
Erik dodges a medium laser and slams the Wolfhound in its Rear Right Torso, destroying one of its medium lasers!
Round 15
The Wolfhound turns to flee, but with no notification that the unit is crippled and fleeing I continue the round. Erik moves after the wounded mech, keeping him just in short range of his PPC.
Erik misses his PPC, and miraculously survives another Large Laser hit by twisting away at the last second leaving a sliver of internal structure in the location (1pt!)
Round 16
Erik backs away checking if the Wolfhound wants to continue to flee, but it turns around and rushes him again instead!
Erik curses and fires everything.
All four of his SRMs hit, with most of them hitting the Wolfhound’s LT. Erik’s PPC blows the armor of the Wolfhound’s RA.
I feel like I’ve said this a thousand times now, but MIRACULOUSLY, the Wolfhound misses most of its shots(he needed sevens!) and the only shot that DID hit, hit one of few places Erik had armor left, his Right Arm! I like to think that Erik is actually dodging these and skillfully blocked the only shot he couldn’t dodge with his remaining armor.
Round 17
Sounding like a broken record here. Erik backs away from the Wolfhound, the Wolfhound pursues.
Erik Fires his SRM hoping to cool down enough to get one last good PPC shot in. One Crits the Wolfhound’s RA, but fails to find the linkage for the Large Laser. The other hits its RT. Erik blocks a medium laser with his own Right Arm watching the rest of the armor there melt off his mech.
Round 18
The wolfhound retreats towards the board edge! Erik pushes his mech as far away from the other mech as he can. Twisting one last time to fire off a farewell PPC, dealing a glancing blow on the Wolfhound’s RT, removing the rest of the armor there before the Wolfhound fades into the distance.
I then take a few rounds to safely get to the other Mechwarrior and pick them up before calling it a victory.
What. A. Battle. If only for the reason that somehow Erik managed to keep every limb on his Panther intact, survive two head shots, and using every bit of his armor to stay alive. I’m honestly impressed. We need to give him a callsign! Give us suggestions! I can’t decide if the techs are going to be happy or pissed!
Tactically it wasn’t very interesting, just a lot of walking backwards for the Panther trying to keep the Wolfhound’s lasers out of range. But man, those rolls!
If I wasn't playing with glancing blows our boy Erik would have been in his ejection seat a long time ago.
We take the Wasp as salvage, probably just to immediately sell it. But I’ll leave that up to you all. Do we use it? Normally a wasp doesn’t hit hard enough for me and I tend to not use them since we don’t really get actual recon missions it would be used for in universe.
The Mechwarrior we picked up is in pretty bad shape and pretty pissed at us. He lost his left arm, sprained his right arm, and suffered a punctured lung. We offer him a deal to work for us and we won't turn him over to the Lyran Intelligence Corps, but he refuses. Too proud for his own good. Too bad, I was hoping to get him a mechanical arm… LIC offers us a pretty penny to hand him over. Poor guy.
Out of courtesy later the LIC sends us a file on him. Turns out he considers himself a Rasalhague Patriot, born in the Hainfield system (curiously while it was still in Combine hands, he must have not liked how the Lyrans treated the world during the Fourth Succession War) and had infiltrated the Lyran military in the area after Rasalhague took over the system.
The Techs didn’t seem too worried when Erik came into the mechbay, in fact they had most of the damage repaired by the next day since they didn’t have much else to do. They pretty easily reattached the Wasp’s Leg as well. But I didn't have them put any armor on the mech just yet. Waiting for your all’s input on what to do with the Wasp.
Going to end this on Tuesday, August 13, 3039. The Techs have the Panther put back together and Erik will be in the infirmary for 16 more days with a sprained right arm and a laceration on his head.
Here’s input I need!
Callsign for Erik-John Dyczkowski (Our protagonist today, the Rasalhague we defeated, then rescued from the elements who now fought his ass off to put down two of technically his own countrymen. What a legend.)
What do we do with the Wasp? It’s repaired minus armor & ammo reload, currently valued at 744,936 C-Bills if we sell it as is.
Thanks!
