The latest development release of MekHq included the new package of about 1400 portraits and they (in my opinion) look great. A quick sample for people who haven't seen them yet.
I have been using the older ink effect portrait pack for this campaign, but these are so nice that I am going to drop a copy of these into my portrait folder for the campaign as well.

Sure, happy to help. In your MekHq folder the portraits are stored at data/images/portraits. Whenever the program is opened it looks at this location to create a list of available portraits in this folder and all its subfolders that it will use for the rest of that session. There is nothing that limits you to only placing images of people in this folder, for example if you wanted to display various unit patches in your personal roster you could make a subfolder full of the unit patch images and they would be usable as "portraits". If you want to add the new portraits you will need a copy of the current development version of Mekhq, which is available from the download page ( megamek.org/downloads.html ). In the portrait folder in the development version you will find the folders for the new male and female portraits, copy these folders into the portrait folder of the stable version you are using for the campaign. If you had Mekhq open while you were adding the images you will need to close the program and reopen it before the new portrait folders will be available in the game. If you right click on personal you find two options for adding a portrait to a character, Randomize Portrait or Change Portrait. In the current stable version "Randomize Portrait(s)" will assign a random portrait of the appropriate sex that hasn't been used yet in that campaign. The "Change Portraits" option allows you to manually select a portrait. The default install of MekHq includes portraits from several scenario books (I edited one of the Sorenson Sabre's portraits to make my profile image) and I added portraits from a few other sources to my installation. The details and download links for those Ink Effects packages can be found here - bg.battletech.com/forums/megamek-games/ink-effect-portraits-for-mekhq-megamek/ - for people wanting even more options. It probably goes without saying, but don't use the development release to play your campaign turns. A saved game file from the development version is likely to cause all sorts of problems for Kris opening it in the stable release version to attempt to process the turn.

Done and done.
Although, I can't seem to get the portraits to update for some... I think because they are assigned to a unit already? I'll keep playing around and try to fix.
With this and Admin's new force icon pack, everything is going to be looking sweet!

There is a bit of variation in the portraits I have seen. Some of the portraits in the base install are around 150x150 (+/- a bit), others are around 300x300 (+/- a bit) and there is a mix of png and jpeg. The ink effects images are all exactly 150x150 and the new portraits are 256x320. I've also used 720x720 portraits without any issues.
I would probably use something around 300x300. The portraits aren't shown very large in Mekhq, so 720x720 is probably already reaching the point where the resolution of the image is larger than the number of pixels it is occupying on the screen.
