For centuries the CIM has cultivated a military based upon effectiveness and honourable conduct. Warning urban areas ahead of time that an attack will take place, sparing vehicle crews and mech warriors of foreign states (bandits and pirates are excluded from this code of conduct) and avoiding military engagements if it can be resolved without needed bloodshed. Sadly enough some slip through the cracks and for the crimes committed on the battlefied or in their own private lives the victims demand justice, in some cases the death penalty. A pity that such excellent men and women have lost their integrity, a tragedy that such skills will be wasted in prison or on death row.
The military wing of the Coalition however always had a tradition of giving those soldiers sentenced to death or life in jail (over 25 years) a final chance to clear their name. Tradition demanded that this happened in the vehicle or battlemech that the convict is familiar with, but due to tampering on their own units some of the convicts in the past received a battlefied execution thus the Mayor demanded a design that can used for this exact purpose.
See the Forlorn Hope, an assault mech made to deliver a hefty toll upon the enemy whilst receiving damage that would cripple any other. Precautions have been made that the mech will perform its intended duty without the sentenced having the capabilities of tampering with it. Furthermore, as long as they are 'employed' their salary will go either to a cleared person or charity of their chosing. Heroic actions can lighten their living conditions on bases or in the camps, but not their sentence as it is only death that will release them from that. Should they fall in the line of duty with honour and regained integrity, they will be cleared of their past crimes so their souls can meet the Lord in peace.
