The Trilani Union is in the process of constructing a new series of standard battlemechs. Designed to work in coordination with one another yet be significantly cheaper than the Celestial series omnimechs produced by the WoB. Current prototypes have been able to defeat equivalent BV clan omnimechs 3/4 times. (Mind you these tests were done with princess; but I'm still content with the results so far.)
Without further adieu; I introduce the Cohort-series.

The Praefectus is the Assault tank of the Cohort. With 14.5 tons of armor and a weapon loadout designs to strip armor off multiple locations as it closes. It's size and weapons ensure that it is the target of enemy fire, allowing the rest of the cohort room to complete their tasks.

The Legatus serves the role of Mobile Bunker. It's size does slow the mech down, but is able to fire 80 LRMs with Artemis V for a sustain 2 minute interval. It is also able to provide a solid screen of smoke with two tons of LRM 20 Smoke. Able to slave in with the rest of the Cohort to a Primus, it is the Trilani Union's ultimate fire support option. There are talks of constructing a city fighting Legatus, ensuring populated areas do not fall to measly mech forces.

I like the Principales, it is a little slow but with that shield it can just keep pushing forward through the incoming fire. The SPLs can't be fired while the shield is being used for active defense, but if you're planning on using it passively when at ranges where the SPLs are relevant then that should be ok. Just keep on eye on your right leg, if you are using the shield for active defense the right leg won't be protected and your opponent may go out of their way to increase their chances of hit there.
I would be nice to have more canon examples of 3/5 heavy mechs published. The "pocket assault" concept has its uses and I think it works well for an affordable C3 master/firesupport mech like your Primus. If you have the critical space available I would consider dropping the LPPC to instead install a second ERML and two more tons of Arrow IV ammo. The two additional tons of AIV ammo would give you the option to carry some of the specialist munitions which would seem suited to its role as a command/support unit. Some well placed AIV inferno, illumination or FASCAM missiles could ruin your opponent's plans.
Some likely lance combinations of these units are going to lack any significant anti-air capability, with the HAG/30 on Praefectus being the only weapon with a flak bonus. The C3 network will help a bit to alleviate this, but I would consider having some of your own fighters to threaten any opposing aircraft. Carrying some Air Defense Arrows is an option on the Primus, but I feel there would be better uses for a ton of missiles.
Finally don't neglect your MFBs and J-37s, since your larger designs are likely to need ammunition resupply after any significant engagement and the Principales will often need to have the shield patched up between battles.

The Principales' energy loadout is designed to help it receive that TSM boost to speed after it's first or second volley. It's actually the easiest 'mech I've used for TSM to date. She should be in active shield and ensuring her left side is always the targeted side during her approach. You are extremely correct in the recognition of the right leg being a threat. I debated up-armoring it but found position was key instead. The SPL I had more as either an anti-infantry or surprise in melee. The Principales has received the most effort from me and has gone through many iterations over the years. She started out as Danai Liao-Centrella's Yen Lo Wang and has progressed to this point.
I love your additions to the Primus, she's the newest Cohort member and the one I struggled with the most. I very much agree with your assessment. I always forget how hard a direct fire Arrow hits. Since she can tag for herself and the Munifex cover's downrange spotting I think I'll do 3 tons homing and 1 ton standard. I may do 1 ton inferno, but I'm mildly opposed to FASCAM. I can never employ them correctly.
I have a dedicated anti-air support vehicle that I keep around for pesky fliers. But I can see the need for it in the lance. I think the easiest swap would be to replace the RAC on the Praefectus as well with an LB-X.
Absolutely, the Praefectus HAG ammo disappears as quickly as Capellan defensive line during a 4th succession war.
*Primus, Praefectus have received updates to reflect.
