Most of the field gun and artillery are just so heavy they won't fit into the traditional dedicated carriers, can they be towed instead if a unit has a trailer hitch?

In a way they are already being towed, since field guns and field artillery can only be equipped to motorized or mechanized infantry. The integral wheeled or tracked light vehicles in those units are being used as the gun tractors and it these light vehicles alongside the guns that make the units so heavy.
I just had quick read through the relevant sections in the tech manual and tactical ops, and I don't see anything that says field guns alter a motorized or mechanized platoons ability to be transported by a dropship style transport bay. Presumably the field guns just get tied down to the same series of attachment points as the platoon's vehicles during transport. There are a few support vehicles that use the full sized transport bays, but off the top of my head I can't remember if any have motorized or mechanized bays. If so one of them may be able to move field guns and artillery quicker than the platoon's integral vehicles.
