Were your troubles occurring with all units or just some? The immediate thing that occurs to me is there are a few unit types, like protomechs and support vehicles, that aren't support by the version of meklab that we are using and they can't be customised within MekHQ.

I haven't had any trouble lately, but if you do have a previous version of MegaMek try creating it there and opening the save file with the newer version.

I just tested some units and found most types loaded for customisation without any issues - tanks, wiges, vtols, conventional fighters, aerospace fighters, conventional infantry, battle armour, small craft and dropships were all fine.
However the half dozen standard battlemechs and omnimechs I tried all refused to load for customisation. But strangely the Omega superheavy battlemech could be customised.

I figure the best way is to make a new unit, not customize and existing one, and save the file, then use refit kits rather than simply customizing units.

Didn't feel like it warranted a whole new thread. How do you select sprites for custom units.

We refer to them as Sprites. Go into the MekHQ\data\images\units folder and look for localclient_mechset.txt and localserver_mechset.txt Open those with a good text editor (I use Notepad++) There are directions in the top of the files. When do it should look like this and should be in both files. chassis "Your Custom Warships Chassis Name" "warships/My Image.png" chassis "Choppy Boy" "mechs/Choppy Boy.png" Names are case sensitive and we recommend the images are in png format. If you want to make your own sprites see here - github.com/MegaMek/megamek/wiki/How-to-draw-MegaMek-Icons-the-Deadborder-wayIts a fantastic tutorial that DeadBorder made. One final step. Go into data\mechfiles and delete the file units.cache and restart MM. It will rebuild unit directory and your sprites should be showing.

Oof soo many steps.
Will this transfer to another player's game when we send files for battle?

I think you would have to add the custom sprite and make them go through this process also.

That's super extra. The basic not-locust, not-hunchback, not-rifleman, and not-atlas are fine. LMAO

Yeah I have no idea how to compile Java so everyone will be sticking with default sprites, sorry. Custom units needed for fights are to be sent just prior to a battle for installation so fights can occur. That is one of the drawbacks of customs, the enemy will be able to see what it is just before the fight, but won't know how many are being fielded.
