Here is hoping you all get a relatively secure starting location, or some decent sized urban centers nearby.
What do you think is most important when it comes to terrain for the first dozen turns?

I wish I could start on my own little island.

I wouldn't mind at least one direction featuring a lake, river or ocean to have one flank secure, however that does leave less room for expansion so its a catch twenty-two. Right about now I am wishing I could call in a few lumberjacks.

I guess finding a whole lot of nothing but open terrain has some advantages, yet it leaves me to wonder if I am the middle of a desert or something.

Mine seems diverse enough right now. I would wish for a start at the end of a peninsula or within a box canyon so I could have a secure core element to work outwards from, but I would argue expansion is probably your best interest even if it would leave defense thin the more you go. Just have to strike a balance on how far you are willing to claim versus expectations on what you can hold for sure. Depends on who your neighbors are and how close by they are. I built a few "rings" of defenders in the alpha because you can't easily keep scouts on all your border segments, and you need some force held back to deal with pirates. I had two such attacks and I know I was lucky with them (one dropped directly on two assault mechs) cause they can carve into your territory fast if you don't respond.

keeperkomando Might I remind you hovercraft can traverse water quite easily, as with air power, so attacks over water on peninsulas can be a real threat. Walking through water with mechs is an option, but a real risk trying to get out of an ocean if you have to deploy against forces in a beach landing. That said it is a pity hovercraft can't capture territory as none of them are "heavy" or "assault", but wait they could carry infantry....hmmm I am getting a sense this isn't the same world as the alpha play test. Not as wide open to me, don't know about the rest of you, but I am finding more water features (lakes or oceans, and rivers) The admin let me know he was working off a more realistic map, generated of course, and actually has made a "biome" map as well to match the world map so he can throw accurate weather and planetary conditions our way in battles.

A bio map sounds neat, I wish we would be privy to it though, maybe in the future? I too have found some water, although I can't tell how much just yet. Nothing wrong with coastlines, I can go fishing after a successful battle. Hopefully there are few swamps, now those annoy !

So we might have snowy regions, hot regions where we have to watch our heat sinks fail more and areas of desert with tons of sand thrown in? I hope the gravity isn't altered?

Yes, yes and yes. I will be making rulings based on the biomes I have created forcing people to add swamps, sand, planted fields on top of the other map conditions and other more obscure terrain hexes as needed. Perhaps if I am really cruel you will find volcanoes and magma flows? No the gravity will stay at 1.0 Earth Gravity, we don't need legs falling off mechs due to control rolls. I will also be rolling for weather conditions and day/night for each battle so it is randomized.

Pilot survives preventing a black out from a fall, followed by having ammunition explode and ejects, passes his ejection injury checks which save his/her life, and promptly lands directly in a river of lava. You know it is going to happen. You cruel hand of fate.

Do hovercraft still need +3 movement to cross rivers and seas?
